Nach öffentlichen Auftritten zieht Hitler sich immer wieder in seinen „Inner Circle“ auf dem Obersalzberg zurück. Währenddessen werden immer mehr europäische Juden in die Vernichtungsfabriken im Osten deportiert und leben in Konzentrationslagern wie Buchenwald. Dort herrschen Terror und Mord. Kommandant Karl Otto Koch führt ganz in der Nähe ein spießbürgerliches Leben mit Frau Ilse – seine Kinder spielen Tür an Tür mit dem Grauen des Lagers.
Mit Hitlers Gesundheit geht es bergab, er ist zunehmend krank und antriebslos. Immer häufiger unterzieht er sich fragwürdigen Behandlungen seines Leibarztes Morell, der ihm stimulierende Drogen-Cocktails verabreicht. Hermann Göring ist aufgrund seiner Morphium-Sucht kaum noch zurechnungsfähig. Während der Reichsmarschall an Einfluss verliert, gefällt sich Joseph Goebbels in seiner neuen Rolle als „Heimatfrontdiktator“, der den „Totalen Krieg“ organisiert. Als die Lage aussichtslos wird, zieht sich Hitler mit seinem Hofstaat in den Führerbunker in Berlin zurück und inszeniert sein unrühmliches Ende.
